Option B for the Diamond Distributors catalog. The entry needs to impress. In this version the idea was to spotlight the center foreground – Fallingstar and Sundog, with the title. I thought option A, though splendidly vivid, did not direct the eye enough through the image. Foreground and background competed for attention. Here in option B, the foreground is clearly delineated, and the eye knows what to focus on first. All that said, it’s still a toss-up. Comments welcome.

I know I am not the best person to be giving any critique’s about someones art but I really love cover art B. What you said about A, and the two “grounds” competing for each other was on the money. My eye kept leaping to both. With cover B, my eye hovers on the 5 “main” characters within Sundog’s reach.

Oh god, I’ve just realized that kid’s armed with a sharpened hubcap. Why’d he go for the hubcap when there was bludgeoning material apleanty in the engine?

I think if you add the Title overlay to A with more highight behind it you can bring the attention back to the title and still keep the cover alive. That’s just my opinion.

No, she doesn’t. :p
I don’t see a problem with the background competing with the foreground. Because when it comes to post-apocalyptic stories, the setting is at least as important as the characters. It’s practically a character in its own right. So I prefer version A.

I have to vote for option B. Option A looks great as poster artwork, but cover art needs to be more focused. That being said, there could be a bit more color, even if only on the main cast, so it looks less dull overall and has the ability to catch someone’s eye from across the aisle.
Oh, and Fallingstar looks great just the way she is.

My vote goes for B, for the tighter focus.
About sharpened hubcap vs. bludgeoning – hubcap as throwing disc is a ranged weapon. Any damage you can do, with yourself well beyond the reach of flailing hooves, improves the hunter’s odds for survival, especially when they are this young.
