The Ghosts of Human Industry

August 12th, 2008

For a visitor to the land of the Sky Shadows, it might be fair, even accurate, to refer to thousands of edifices such as this oil rig as ghosts.

It was not necessarily the loss of technology and its benefits that led to the current state of humanity, and it wasn’t even necessarily the advent of the nano-virus that plagues people like Sundog, Fallingstar and Rockjumper in Tribes: The Dog Years, the new color comic book series from Soulcraft Comics. It was the speed with which human civilization, once deprived of its various technological protections, collapsed.

The environment, both plants and animals, once freed from its conflict with short-term industry, reasserted itself with a vengeance and what was once a temperate forested land quickly grew to become a ravenous overgrown jungle. Almost every open space was consumed, the tropical wave slowed only by the few remaining ghosts of humanity’s progress.

It is through this haunted landscape that Dr. Irving Adams must lead a desperate expedition to locate and activate a machine so small that it can hide behind an amoeba. It may be the last surviving remnant of human scientific advancement, and for the sake of the Sky Shadows and Dr. Adams, they hope it too is not a ghost.

Rockjumper of the Sky Shadows

August 12th, 2008

The tribe of Sundog, Fallingstar and Rockjumper is ruled by a Chief and two advisors: the Medicine Man and the First Warrior, in Tribes: The Dog Years, the new color graphic fiction/comic book series from Soulcraft Comics.

As the story opens, the reigning Chief, Deerslayer, is in failing health, and it will soon fall to Rockjumper to assume the leadership role of the Sky Shadows, a role he has observed as First Warrior and the leader of many hunting parties.

But there are doubts that the heir apparent to Deerslayer’s rule is ready for his responsibilities. Rockjumper seems to be very rigid in his adherence to the “Sky Shadow Way,” the central warrior code that holds the tribe together and forms the heroic myth by which hunters are trained and their success is measured.

These doubts are inflamed when Sundog begins to chafe at Rockjumper’s ruthlessness, and the stage is set for an eventual showdown between the voices of the future and those of the past.

The Central Myth of the Sky Shadow tribe

July 29th, 2008

Sky Shadow. It is a mysterious name, and has an even more mysterious origin in the world of Tribes, the new full color series by Soulcraft Comics. For a tribe of hunters, the idea of being the hunted was almost an alien concept. Yet for LightningRider, first Chief, his strength in escaping the deadly claws of a great cat was enough to transform the hunted, the scattered and the powerless into a culture of survival.

The totem LightningRider returned with gave the Sky Shadows their identity. The mark of the first Chief is carried grimly by hunter and warrior alike as the small band of courageous tribespeople makes their way through a troubled history.

The symbol of the Sky Shadow is their herald and symbol to the other scattered remnants of nearby humanity. On the night LightningRider survived, he and his people became the Sky Shadows.

Fallingstar of the Sky Shadows

July 29th, 2008

FALLINGSTAR in Tribes: The Dog Years, the new color graphic fiction series from Soulcraft Comics:

For the Sky Shadow tribe, life consists of a series of tough choices between absolute necessities. Survival is paramount; everyone has a role to play in a tightly knit tribal system. But for Fallingstar, being chosen as the future wife of a Chief, somehow does not feel right. What is her true destiny? Why does she yearn for more, beyond her role.

She yearns to become more than is expected of her. Does she dedicate her life to her duty, or does she take another path? Can a young woman determine her people’s priorities while also avoiding her role as one of their leaders? Will her determination endanger her and her people’s future? But there is no time to ponder. In the world of Tribes: The Dog Years, humans live to only twenty-one years of age. Fallingstar must act - now!

And so she is inspired by Doctor Irving Adams, the seemingly immortal scientist who has apparently lived nearly three lifetimes, and his tales of a world beyond the limited existence of her isolated and constantly threatened tribe. How has he survived? Is his magic real, as opposed to the nonsense of the Sky Shadows’ medicine man, Signeader. Dr. Adams seeds the dream that one day she might actually see and help raise her grandchildren.

Her influence stirs Sundog, our reluctant hero, to join Adams and his mysterious quest to find the source of the “plague” that robs humans of precious life at the tender age of twenty-one.

Fallingstar, future wife of the Chief of the Sky Shadows, will play a crucial role in the future of humanity.

Sundog

July 29th, 2008

“You are not Sky Shadow.” The words are enough to provoke a fight to the death between any two self-respecting members of Sundog’s tribe, yet the turning point in this young hunter’s life is when his own chief utters the words “I am not Sky Shadow.” Sundog is a central character in Tribes: The Dog Years, the new graphic fiction series from Soulcraft Comics.

His early days are spent honing his skill, speed and instinct, but as he reaches an age where he can challenge his peers for leadership and privilege, he finds that his courage may diverge from that of his chief.

More than any other character, Sundog carries with him the weight of almost an entire civilization, if one tribe can be called that. If Doctor Irving Adams, the immortal, is successful in his search, Sundog’s strength may change the future of the entire human race.

Without Sundog’s support, Doctor Adams may never get the chance to follow his “magic” to what he believes may be the key to ending humanity’s plague. Is it his destiny to blaze a path for humanity? Will a new tribe - a Tribe of the Quest - be borne of the ragtag remnants of the defeated, the lost, the aimless? Will Sundog, a humble hunter in the Sky Shadows, be reborn as a new leader?

Only time and experience will tell. For Sundog will travel thousands of miles, and his journey will be full of fantastic discoveries and mortal dangers in Tribes: The Dog Years, coming soon from SoulCraft Comics.

SOULCRAFT COMICS - independent genre comics…

July 10th, 2008

SoulCraft Comics has a number of comic projects in development: TRIBES is our first project. With art by Inaki Miranda and color by Eva de la Cruz, TRIBES: THE DOG YEARS is a full comic graphic novel in widescreen, so to speak. The horizontal aspect, it is thought, will produce a more immersive experience. I hope our readers agree. The comic will premiere shortly on the website, with print publication following in 2009.

TOLL RUNNERS, in collaboration with Steve Katz, is a futuristic racing saga. SoulCraft plans to preview a number of designs shortly on the web.

GHOST EATERS - based on a script by Joel Madison and Michael Geszel, this supernatural serial follows a small group of teenagers misdiagnosed as insane. They seem to need to eat ghosts to stay sane. That is, they can interact with supernatural entities and in fact need to ingest them, thereby righting a mental and phsycal imbalance. Doctor Nostrum believes he has come across a unique human physiological mutation in these teenagers. Our webcomic premieres in late ‘08.

Envisioned as a seven-issue limited series, VINES is best summed up as a supernatural horror rollercoaster about “the jungle coming to the city. ” SoulCraft is lucky to be working with writer Ben McCool, as long as we keep him well supplied with tinnies….
